Stranger Things: Darkness on the Edge of Town Book Review

Stranger Things: Darkness on the Edge of Town Book Review

Stranger Things: Darkness on the Edge of Town Novel Review

Stranger Things: Darkness on the Edge of Town was written by Adam Christopher. This novel bounces between a prequel era, long before events of the show, and moments just before season three.

SUMMARY: In this Stranger Things novel we get a glimpse at the relationship between Eleven and James Hopper. It takes place between the events of Season two and three. Eleven wants to know more about Hopper and his past as the duo is snowed in to their cabin. The novel flashes back to the 70s when Hopper was a homicide detective in NYC. A possible serial killer is prowling the streets. Hopper and his parter begin their investigation until it’s taken away by the FBI.

The story explodes with historical knowledge of our beloved Sheriff, of Hawkins Indiana. In this story you’ll witness how Hopper was involved in uncovering a sinister plot by a cult, who may… or may not summon the devil himself.

CHARACTER: Out of the few characters to talk about, I chose to briefly discuss the most important, James Hopper. He was a Family man, who really loved his wife and daughter. He’s also a Vietnam veteran. His choice to move to NYC from his hometown of Hawkins Indiana, was motivated by his desire for action. Once he came home from Vietnam, small town Hawkins just wasn’t “exciting” enough.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: I enjoyed this novel. It was captivating and really held my attention. It’s a thrilling and suspenseful tale of crime. Its a great backstory piece for Hopper, it’s story points and details don’t lean on the events that happen on the Netflix series, and that’s great. Dialogue was good, and all the characters were written well.

Do I recommend that you read Stranger Things: Darkness on the Edge of Town? Well, if you like Stranger Things, yes. If you don’t like Stranger Things, I still think you’d enjoy it, it’s a great crime novel.

RATING: I will give this book a B+

My Best Friend`s Exorcism Book Review

My Best Friend`s Exorcism Book Review

My Best Friend’s Exorcism

SPOILER FREE

My Best Friends Exorcism was written by Grady Hendrix

SUMMARY: A young Abby Rivers has the worst birthday ever, but midway through her lame party, she’ll meet a special someone that’ll drastically change her life forever.

In this this story of friendship, we follow the high school years of Abby, Gretchen, and a few other friends within their circle. One day, the girls are having a great time hangin’ out and having fun. Things get crazy and go sideways when one of the girls has a wild idea… and in comes the devil!

CHARACTERS: This novel contains a nice cast of characters. I will only mention the two leads.

Abby: She’s a nice kid, always reward hang out and cut loose with her friends. Her favorite movie was E.T. Her parents aren’t wealthy, but they do manage to have Abby in a private school. (Where all her wealthier friends are). Abby is loyal, encouraging, and extremely brave.

Gretchen: The innocent, friendly right hand of Abby. She comes from a wealthy family, which comes with a little baggage, irritating parents. She’s very nice, a great friend… until the devil comes in.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: My Best Friends Exorcism, was a wonderful read. I enjoyed it so much! I may even return to this book next October, turning it into an annual horror read. It was a quick read, loaded with good times and horror.

The characters were written so well! The chemistry between the friends, teachers, and parents was so organic. I was reminded of my high school years through these characters, except I’m a dude… and we didn’t do drugs.

My only issue with the book, was the faith part of the story (being that faith in each other is more powerful than Christ). That’s just due to my personal belief.

Do I recommend you read My Best Friends Exorcism? Yes, I highly recommend this book!

RATING: I will give this book a 4.5 of 5

Iron Man The Gauntlet Book Review

Iron Man The Gauntlet Book Review

Iron Man: The Gauntlet was written by New York Times Best Selling Author Eoin Colfer.

Summary: Tony Stark is on his way to an Eco Summit in Ireland, when his personal AI distracts him. The software pulls up a satellite image which displays across the Iron Man helmet visual scan. An out of place gunship on an abandoned island seemed a little too suspicious to Stark, it looked as though trouble was in the making. Well, trouble is exactly what unfolds. A trap, set up by his latest AI software, a.k.a Friday.

Tony springs the trap and loses the Iron Man suit. now Tony Stark must outwit the powerful villain, the Chef… in order to break free and ruin the Chefs evil plan for the Eco Summit.

Characters: Saoirse (Seer-sha), an intelligent young Irish gal who’s out for revenge. She blames Tony for events that led to her family being pulled apart. While she was intelligent, she wasnt smart enough to know what kind of crowd shed been mixed up with. Ally or enemy? I won’t spoil that reveal.

The primary antagonist goes by Chef. He’s a vicious man out to destroy his nemeses Iron Man, and bring terror to the world.

Tony Stark aka Iron Man… is Tony Stark. Witty, Funny, Rude, and Rich.

Overall Thoughts:  Iron Man: The Gauntlet was a decent book, it’s actually the first Marvel book that I’ve read. I could really tell that the book was aimed toward younger readers, which isn’t a problem at all. The cover clarifies that this if for grades between 3-7 or ages 8-12.  As an adult/man-child, I must be honest and admit, I  did some fun reading the book. Would I rather read an Iron Man book aimed toward a more mature audience? Yes, I would. I haven’t spent the time to research if such Marvel books exist.

The plot in this book was pretty simple and was loaded with action. Author Eoin Colfer did a great job describing the environment without overloading on pointless details. The dialogue wasn’t the greatest. There were many times in which I felt the sarcasm and “witty” comments were tiresome and eye rolling.  Maybe that’s just kid humor… I’m sure it is.

You like Iron Man? Want more literature with the rich fancy pants hero? Just a collector of Iron Man material? Then I suggest you pick up this book.

While Iron Man: The Gauntlet was some fun, I didn’t think it was an excellent read.

Rating: I give this book a 2  out of 5
